COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - South Carolina's unemployment rate is still considerably higher than the nation's.
In December, state unemployment was 9.5%.
But that was part of a positive trend. It was the 4th consecutive month of declining unemployment in South Carolina.
Last August, the state hit a high of 11.1%.
When the December numbers came in for South Carolina, they were the lowest the state has seen in three years.
Most of the new jobs were generated by trade, transportation, utilities and manufacturing.
The down sectors losing jobs were leisure and hospitality and government. Government jobs in fact were down in South Carolina by 2,800.
But there is one federal agency South Carolina that is hiring: the U.S. Postal Service.
A couple of weeks ago the postal service put out a notice saying it had 180 open positions. A spokesman said post offices need workers to replace many who are reaching retirement age.
