CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Professional football is set to end next weekend with the playing of the Super Bowl, but the Carolina Panthers are already making changes with a new look ahead of the 2012 season.
The Panthers unveiled a new logo on Sunday night - the first change to the logo since the team entered the National Football League (NFL) in 1995.
The new logo has been designed to "provide a more aggressive, contemporary look to the logo" while making it more three-dimensional, a release from the Panthers on Sunday night stated.
The new logo is refined and reflects a "modernized version of the previous logo [...] reflecting a tougher, more defined panther, the evolved logo is evocative of the popular panther statues found on the grounds of Bank of America Stadium," the organization said.
The primary tweaks made by the creative department of the National Football League are primarily in the features in the eye and mouth.
The new font subtly nods to the swipe of a panther, through a three-stripe element incorporated into the "A" of "PANTHERS".
"We have one of the finest and most recognizable logos in the NFL and wanted to make it as modern as possible without losing the dramatic essence of the mark," team president Danny Morrison said. "It is a cleaner style that is easier to read and should be more applicable to different uses," says Morrison.
The new logo is effective immediately and will be available on products starting in April 2012, the Panthers stated, and the usage of the new trademark will be incorporated throughout this year.
