HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - SLED has been contacted to investigate a shooting in Horry County that occurred after officers responded to a 911 call concerning an attempted suicide.

Horry County Police officers responded to home on Prestwick Drive in the Burgess Community Saturday around 11:30 a.m., said Lisa Bourcier, spokesperson for Horry County.

An Island Green Subdivision resident had contacted 911 concerning an attempted suicide in progress.

When police officers arrived on the scene, they found a female that had detained herself in a closet inside her home with a handgun, Bourcier said.

During an unsuccessful attempt to negotiate with the woman, the female acted in a way that caused the officers to react. The officers shot the woman once in the leg.

The female victim was transported to a local hospital for her injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Witnesses on the street say things were peaceful one moment, and chaotic the next, with police vehicles blocking the street.

"There were cop cars down the street," says neighbor Geoffrey Guyette. "They had crime scene tape up."

People continued to watch the scene throughout the afternoon, shocked at what they were witnessing.

"It was crazy," says Megan Montiegel. "Noting ever happens in this neighborhood like that."

SLED has been contacted to investigate this officer-involved shooting, which is standard protocol, Bourcier said.
