COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott says two of his officers were victimized over the weekend due to drunk driving.
Last year, Scott says five officers were victims.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol says Joshua Waters caused an accident on Sumter Street.
Troopers say waters ran a red light, crashed into the patrol car, then slammed into Greek Boys restaurant.
Scott says a second drunk driver struck an unoccupied police cruiser Sunday morning near Gervais and Washington streets.
"Everyone thinks I can do it -- I can drive home, but clearly we see that these accidents are happening," said Scott. "Some are fatal sometimes."
Officers will be setting up checkpoints near city neighborhoods, downtown and Five Points.
The Vista will also be an area the police will be patrolling. Scott says they will get help from Richland County Sheriff's Department and Highway Patrol.
"We are making sure we are going to be aggressive in our patrols over the weekend," said Scott.
