COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a drunk driver crashed into a Columbia police cruiser Saturday morning before crashing into a downtown building.

Troopers charged 21 year-old Joshua Waters with DUI.  After he was treated at the hospital for injuries suffered in the crash, Waters was taken to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Investigators say at about 7:30 a.m., Waters ran a red light while crossing Sumter Street at Hampton Street, and crashed into a police cruiser on Hampton Street.

The police officer was taken to the hospital and Columbia Police say he is expected to be okay. His name hasn't been released yet.

After hitting the patrol car, the driver then crashed into the Greek Boys restaurant on Sumter Street.    The owner of the restaurant tells WIS that once the damage is repaired, it will reopen.
