CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
Former Oklahoma congressman J.C. Watts was in Charleston to support Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich.
Watts stopped by the Live 5 News studio to talk about his visit and his candidate.
"The clock has begun and it's underway. Crazy thing happen in campaigns and we've gone through two states and we think Gingrich is in position pretty well," Watts said.
Watts served in the House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003. Watts said he saw the work Gingrich did as speaker and credits Gingrich with helping to create an atmosphere that made 11 million jobs.
"Forget about all the talking points, look at the candidates and what they did when they had a vote or they were in a leadership position," Watts said."Newt Gingrich balanced the budget, first time in my 54 years we've had a balanced budget. We got tax reductions, we paid $450 billion to our national debt and we had entitlement reform."
Watts says the focus should be at the records of the candidates and not the negative ads. He says Gingrich has a good string of accomplishments that will help him here in South Carolina.
"We feel pretty good how we're positioned coming into South Carolina and we think it's going to be a state that's going to launch him forward," Watts said.
