TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

The Tempe City Council is set to vote Thursday night on approving a $24 million project to build a new steel dam at Tempe Town Lake.

A new dam is needed at Tempe Town Lake and city officials have their top pick for a replacement.

After looking at 20 alternatives, city officials said their No. 1 pick to replace the rubber dam is a steel, hinged-gate dam.

A panel recommended the dam, saying it was safe, retractable and durable.

The current rubber dam is temporary and will only be in place through 2015.

The steel dam would have a life cycle of 50 years.
