Man shot dead in parking lot of restaurant was dining with family

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – The Columbia Police Department say the deadly shooting outside a local Italian restaurant that left one man dead Thursday night, was not a random act of violence.

According to police, the victim, 21-year-old Thomas T. Hoefer, may have known the person or person(s) involved in the shooting.

Officers say they responded to 274 Harbison Boulevard around 9:00 p.m.  after receiving  an emergency call about a shooting at the Olive Garden Italian restaurant on December 29.

When officers arrived, they discovered Hoefer lying in the parking lot.

Investigators believe that Hoefer visited the restaurant to dine with family members and that he was shot after stepping away to talk to someone.

Hoefer was transported to Lexington Medical Center, where he later died due to a single gunshot wound to the chest, according to Lexington County Coroner Harry O. Harman.

Harmon says the cause of death was exsanguinations due to laceration of the lung.

Investigators continue to gather information about the shooting. We've learned that Hoefer had a criminal record with charges including drug and gun possession, second degree burglary, and resisting arrest.
