FORT MILL, SC (WBTV) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol says an elderly man was killed and two others had to be airlifted after three cars collided on the interstate just outside of Fort Mill on Wednesday morning.
According to York County Coroner Sabrina Gast, 78-year-old Louis Nathaniel Agurs, of Rock Hill, was killed when his van was hit from the side after two other drivers collided.
Trooper Billy Elder told WBTV that 36-year-old Brad Birmele and 29-year-old Natasha Simpson were driving along Interstate 77 Wednesday morning when their vehicles collided on the interstate near mile marker 83.
The crash happened under the bridge for Sutton Road at 8:00 a.m., troopers say.
That's when Simpson's 2000 Toyota collide with Agurs' van causing it to overturn. Agurs then collided into a concrete bridge support, Simpson overturned and crashed into the concrete median.
Troopers say Agurs was killed on impact.
Simpson and 24-year-old Timothy Campbell, a passenger in Agurs' van, had to be airlifted to hospitals in Charlotte, Elder told WBTV.
Birmele was not transported to be treated for any injuries.
Emergency crews had to block several lanes of traffic along Interstate 77 northbound for several hours following the crash.
Images from South Carolina Department of Transportation cameras showed heavy traffic in the area on the northbound I-77 lanes. Trooper Elder says traffic had to be diverted onto the ramp for Sutton Road, exit 83, and back onto the interstate.
The interstate later re-opened after crews cleaned up the crash.
