ORANGEBURG, SC (WIS) – A Santee man has been arrested for the second time in seven months for operating illegal gambling machines on a Lake Marion cruise boat, according to Orangeburg County deputies.

Deputies executed a search warrant onboard the Mark Twain Friday night and found seven gambling and video poker machines in the bar area, according to Sheriff Leroy Ravenell. Ravenell said a band was playing, patrons were at the bar, and the machines were warm to the touch when officers boarded.

Deputies believe William R. Detyens has been running a gambling operation for years under the guise of dinner cruises, and installed the machines after his arrest in March. Deputies seized 16 video poker machines and close to $2,000 in cash during that raid.

"Good times ended early Friday night," Ravenell said about this weekend's bust. "I say to the owner of the Mark Twain it wasn't legal then, and it's not legal now."

Detyens is again charged with unlawful possession/operation of slot, video, vending machine or gambling devices. Bond was set at $20,000 on Thursday.

Detyens says he employees about 60 people on the boat and another 800 at his businesses in Charleston County.

We went by Detyens' marina Friday, but he wasn't available for comment.
