City Council halts sale of stadium after protests

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Plans to build a shopping center on the south side of downtown Columbia are on hold.

Columbia City Council asked City Manager Steve Gantt to hold off on executing a contract to sell Capital City Stadium to until they can address concerns being raised by the public.

Some people have questions about the environmental impact of the project. Others question whether a shopping center is the right type of development for Assembly Street.

The Atlanta-based developers planning to buy the stadium property have been associated with Walmart, but there's no official confirmation the company will build a store in that spot.
