Bank of America website outage continues on Tuesday

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV/AP) - Bank of America's website had problems for a fourth day out of the last five -- with issues continuing even on Tuesday.

The problems started on Friday and a message on the bank's home page Saturday said "some of our pages are temporarily unavailable." The problems seemed fixed on Sunday.

But, on Monday, people were still having problems. Many folks who work at WBTV were unable to log on the mobile site at times -- and were having issues with the main site.

On Tuesday, the site had problems around noon when the homepage was replaced with a message of "We're sorry, our site is running slowly." The outage Tuesday is not as serious as the other days -- which replaced the homepage with "Our Homepage is Unavailable"

The site was also affected in late February and early March when a major outage hit. Then, the bank said the outage was because of an upgrade, not hackers.

Like then, the bank says now that the outage is "definitely not hackers," but they didn't mention anything to WBTV about an upgrade.

During all of the problems, customers were able to access the company's online banking services through a link on its home page, spokeswoman Tara Burke told WBTV.

Burke said Saturday that there are still "some sporadic issues" and that the site was still slower than usual. She declined to comment on the reason behind the problems.

Bank of America, based in Charlotte, is the largest U.S. bank by deposits. It offers customers a free eBanking account if they do all their banking online and at ATMs.

On Thursday, the company said it would start charging a $5 monthly fee for customers who make debit card purchases.

Burke said that the outage has "nothing to do with debit card fees."

"I want to be very clear that this is not an issue of hacking. There has been no compromise to customer information," Burke told WBTV.

She also said that "we don't break out the root cause" of such outages or problems.

Burke did not offer an estimated time to WBTV for when the site will be fixed.
