ROWESVILLE, SC (WIS) - Colleton County Sheriff George Malone will not be charged after colliding with a school bus while attempting to pass several cars last week in Orangeburg County.

The accident, which happened on US 21 outside of Rowesville around 2:45p.m. on Tuesday, sent four Orangeburg Consolidated School District Five students to the hospital as well as the sheriff.

Malone was driving a county-owned 2011 Tahoe and passing several other vehicles when he hit a school bus turning left onto Hewitt Road.

The Highway Patrol completed its investigation into the accident and no charges will be filed against Malone or the school bus driver. Troopers said there's no law against passing multiple cars on a dotted yellow line and that it's the responsibility of the driver being passed to watch out for cars before turning.

Troopers said 13 students were on board the bus, and the four that were taken to hospital had minor injuries. The 67-year-old sheriff was treated and released.
