ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) - An Orangeburg father is in jail on charges he hit his 3-month-old son and the child's mother. Police credit a witness for helping them protect the child.

Orangeburg Police said it took the courage of a teenager to have a man arrested on domestic violence charges. "The 16-year-old's primary concern was for the safety of the child," said Captain Michael Adams. "She made a phone call to law enforcement."

Captain Adams said a phone call might have saved the child's life. "That family member really stood up," he said. "In my book, she's a hero in that. There was a lot of chaos going on between the boyfriend and girlfriend."

Police arrested Brandon Rickenbacker on charges of domestic violence and unlawful conduct toward a child. It was his second arrest in a month. "Several weeks ago, he was arrested by this agency for criminal domestic violence involved in the same young lady, and it was the same residence," he said.

Police said Rickenbacker attacked his girlfriend this week and hit his own son in the head. Captain Adams said the child is OK. The 16-year-old was home when it happened. "She stood up," said Captain Adams. "She did the right thing. She notified us, and then after that, she was very candid in her account of what happened prior to our arrival. And I just can't say enough good things about her."

According to police, Rickenbacker was out on bond for the domestic violence arrest last month. He's now held without bond.
