COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Students in one Midlands school discovered a crime scene Thursday.  They found it in the auditorium at Harbison West Elementary and then helped gather evidence to solve the case.

The 5th graders spent the day bagging evidence and gathering facts on a mock assault. They had to collect hair and blood samples from the scene. Detective Patty Stegura taught them how to test blood samples. Student investigator Lauren Henderson said, "The clumping you need to look for in the positive and negative testing is very faint.  You have to look very hard to find it."

"The blood was fun because we got to find out who the person was that committed the crime," said another student investigator Brianna Hartley.

Students had to skip recess to take part in the in-school field trip. Stegura is a science educator and created the CSI investigation experiment to help students have a passion for science. "When they're actively involved and engaged in what they're doing, then they can soar and they love it," Stegura said.
