"Naked burglar" covered in mud tussles with deputies

COPE, SC (WIS) - It's definitely not something you see every day, and it's probably not something Orangeburg County deputies want to encounter again for quite a while -- a naked man covered in mud (and possibly on drugs) trying to break into a home in Cope last week.

Deputies said they responded to a burglary call around 2:00pm Thursday after the homeowner reported a naked man trying to break down the back door of the home with a stick. According to a police report, the homeowner told deputies the man pointed at the homeowner's wife "and started moving in a hunching motion," saying he wanted to have sex with her.

While deputies were interviewing the homeowner, the report states that the man walked around the house toward them, covered in dirt and dried mud. Deputies said the man -- later identified as 33-year-old Paul Ott of Rowesville -- had a scratched and swollen face, and appeared to be "on some type of drug."

Deputies said they handcuffed Ott, who became irate and started rolling around on the ground. The report states that Ott pulled his arms under his feet while still handcuffed and tried to run off, but deputies were able to pin him to the ground until EMTs arrived.

Ott was taken to the hospital for medical attention, and is charged with trespassing, public disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and indecent exposure.
