LAURENS COUNTY, SC (WYFF) - Laurens County deputies say a man was shot after he cut his sister's throat and slashed her face Tuesday afternoon.
It happened on Highway 72 East about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Investigators say a brother and sister got into an argument and the brother cut the sister's throat and slashed her face.
Family members said the two were at the home of their father, who lost his battle with cancer the night before. Cousin Mary Waltman said the family was preparing for the man's funeral when the incident happened.
Waltman said the brother, Bobby Avery, has had a long-term feud with the family. "[Bobby] was calm at first, and then all the sudden he just went berserk," said Waltman. "[Bobby] done take some pictures off the wall, and [his sister] told him to put them back and the next thing I know, he done had her in a headlock and had the knife up just slicing away."
Waltman said a family friend named Tony shot Bobby after the attack.
"I hollered, told [Bobby] to stop," said Tony, who didn't want to give his last name. "He just kind of throwed her down. He throwed her down, he took a step towards me and when he took a step towards me, I shot him."
The brother and sister were both airlifted to the hospital.
Investigators said the brother is in the intensive care unit, while his sister, identified as Mae Avery by relatives, is in stable condition after undergoing surgery.
