LANCASTER, SC (WBTV) – A family is still in shock after their horse was shot to death Saturday morning.

Julie Dunn was driving to her ranch off Old Church Road from her home in Charlotte when her husband called her to tell her one of their five horses had died.

He spared her the details while she drove.  When she arrived, he could only describe her reaction as "hysterical".

"We had the Sheriff of Lancaster County come out and sure enough, she had been shot," says Dunn though a quivering lip, fighting tears.

She says the Sheriff confirmed the horse had been shot four times with a shotgun:  Hip, neck, and two in the stomach.

"I really can't say how somebody can just shoot a horse, like that and, just leave her, is my main thing because she was suffering a lot until I found her yesterday  morning," Dunn says in a broken sentence, fighting the urge to break down.

She called the horse Pretty Girl.  The Tennessee Walking Horse was 28 years old, spending all but the first six of her years with the Dunn family.

They describe her as a gentle horse who loved to be ridden; their favorite horse who they rode with their infant grandchildren.

"My father-in-law loved to ride her," says Dunn.  "He said that she was just like a smooth Cadillac when you'd ride her, she was just real soft."

Dunn calls the whole ordeal senseless and says she's considering an necropsy (animal autopsy) for Pretty Girl in hopes it will bring them closer to the shooter.

Police are investigating the case.
