COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The announcement about a deal to bring an Amazon distribution center to Lexington County was initially met with great hoopla. Since that time, it has become the source of great controversy, with other businesses in the state crying foul, and Governor Haley threatening to renege on the deal. She has since acquiesced, but now the opposition has launched a campaign to fight it.
The controversy surrounds tax exemption incentives that former Governor Sanford agreed to provide to Amazon without consulting key lawmakers and revenue officials. Lexington County business leaders endorse the plan saying the long term economic gains far outweigh the short term tax hit. The anti-Amazon crowd feel that it's not fair for Amazon to get a tax break that isn't offered to them.
At stake here are over 1200 jobs and a potential multi-million dollar economic impact. Could the deal have been handled better? Yes. But if we back out now, both the deal and our state's reputation for honoring a business commitment could be in jeopardy.
That's my perspective. What's yours?
