High School Spotlight: Maria Verdugo

By Mandy Mitchell - bio | email

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - In this week's high school spotlight, WIS News 10's Mandy Mitchell ventured to Spring Valley High School to introduce you to a senior who excels in all areas of life.

The young lady was lettered in multiple sports, including wrestling. She's headed to West Point next year. It's easy to see why Spring Valley Athletics Director Tim Hunter has called Maria Verdugo his poster child.

It's spring, so right now there is a good bet you will find Verdugo on the lacrosse field, still learning a game she picked up recently. "It's new to me," she said, "I've only been playing for a couple of years. I love the aggressiveness of the sport."

Aggressive might be a good way to describe Maria. She's not one to sit back and spectate. She competes in anything and everything, including wrestling against the boys. "I have two older brothers who used to antagonize me," Verdugo said, "Wrestling is the perfect way to show I can compete with them on their level."

She got her wrestling skills from another sport, cheerleading

Next year, she will make one of the biggest moves of her life. Maria is heading to West Point to continue her education and join the United States Army. "I come from a military family so I've been around military my entire life," she said, "West Point is the only school for me. I'm ready to be challenged academically and physically."

"She's a fierce competitor," said Hunter, "She plays by the rules. She will do West Point proud."
