Girl fatally run over by truck in driveway, sheriff says

LANCASTER, SC (WBTV) - Deputies in Lancaster say a three-year-old girl was killed when she fell out of a moving truck and was run over.

According to a Lancaster County Sheriff's report, deputies were called to a Mangum Drive home just before 8 p.m. Tuesday. The family of 3-year-old Shirley Totherow told deputies that the little girl had been run over while the family was moving.

The little girl's mother and father were helping a family member move in to a new home along the 1800 block of Mangum Drive on Tuesday night. While everyone was inside the home, another family member, Omar Tovar, went outside to smoke a cigarette and urinate, since the water had not been turned on inside the home.

Tovar told deputies he thought everyone else was inside, but when he came around the corner of the home, he saw a pickup truck rolling down the driveway.  That's when he saw 3-year-old Shirley Totherow fall out of the truck, hit the ground and the tire of the truck ran over her head.

According to the report, Tovar screamed for help, grabbed the little girl and rushed her to the hospital where emergency workers attempted to save her.  She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The keys had been left in the ignition of the truck, according to deputies.  After an investigation, deputies say the death appears to be accidental.  No charges have been filed.
