Watchful eyes lead to arrest of two suspects

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Two armed men were caught burglarizing an apartment complex and arrested, and authorities said it was possible thanks to the help of an alert citizen.

After a string of burglaries last month, the Richland County Sheriff's Department utilized its Dialogic Emergency Notification system and let residents know that deputies were looking for two vehicles that may have been used during the incidents. One of those vehicles was reported as a gold color compact.

Sheriff Leon Lott said one resident took down the information, and when she went to her mailbox, she saw a gold color compact driving slowly down her street. He said she noticed the vehicle turn around several times before getting into her own car and following it. The woman was able to obtain the vehicle's license plate number and report it to authorities before Sheriff Lott said she saw it enter The Landings apartment complex. At that point, he said she proceeded to dial 911.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department does utilize a number of technological tools to keep the public informed and to allow a line of communication between the department and citizens in the community. Sheriff Lott said these tools and the watchful eyes of residents have helped the department solve a number of cases.
