Get updates on Bower Parkway construction via social media

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The City of Columbia will use the power of social media to keep you in the know on a major road project.

Bower Parkway will be dug up and re-surfaced this spring, but before Facebook and Twitter get updated, the city did business the old fashioned way by meeting face-to-face with business owners.

The mile and a half two-lane road runs from Harbison Boulevard to Piney Grove Road, and is home to the stores where many people like to shop. "The road really needs to be repaired," said Merri Mitchell of Plato's Closet.

Shop owners and managers are happy Bower Parkway will soon be a smoother ride, but they're concerned all the construction will slow down their business. "We are still open," said Mitchell. "We are still here and we're gonna do the best we can so our customers still have a great shopping experience."

"They wanna make sure the public knows they are open for business throughout construction," said Missy Gentry.

The construction is expected to take two months, starting in March and ending in April. The job is a big one. "We are going to completely dig up the road about 12 inches, make sure what's underneath the road is solid and then go back and resurface the road," said Ray Borders Gray.

If you would like to get updates on Bower Parkway detours this spring, search for the city of Columbia on Facebook, Twitter and Nixel.
