Police: Armed suspects confessed to robbery near Walmart

WINNSBORO, SC (WIS) - A 17-year-old and a juvenile were arrested and charged with armed robbery after police said the duo jumped a couple near the Winnsboro Walmart.

The incident occurred back on January 16th.

Public Safety Director Freddie Lorick reported that a man and a woman were walking home along an Eighth Street sidewalk when the two suspects came out of the bushes, hit the man in the head with a gun, stole the woman's purse, and fled.

The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office assisted the case and provided K9's at the scene. Lorick said the dogs picked up the suspects' scents and led officers to a home on Chatham Circle. After collecting several pieces of evidence, Lorick said a search warrant was executed at the house the following day. He said officers did find the woman's purse and phone inside the home as well as some other items pertaining to the case. A gun was also retrieved that Lorick said was used in the robbery and stolen from Walmart.

Marcellus Benjamin is being held at the Fairfield County Detention Center while the juvenile is at the Department of Juvenile Justice. Lorick said after questioning the individuals, both confessed to the crime.
