SLED investigating $15k missing from Lexington Co. treasury

LEXINGTON, SC (WIS) – The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating what happened to $15,000 missing from the Lexington County Treasurer's Office.

An audit found that some cash transactions were not subject to proper supervision, and the money was not deposited into the county's bank accounts. Additionally, the audit states that a clerk took advantage of personal and business relationships to obtain supervisory approval without supervisors performing follow-up procedures.

The clerk in question was not named in the report, and so far it's not known whether criminal charges will be filed. SLED could not comment specifically on the ongoing investigation.

The treasurer's office contacted SLED and began investigating once the money was discovered missing. The treasurer's office says it has enhanced and implemented new controls as well as provided staff training and changed supervisor procedure's to prevent future occurrences.
