DILLON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Deputies with the Dillon County Sheriff's Office have released the identity of a man found dead along a Dillon County Road Tuesday.
Capt. Cliff Arnette, spokesman for the Dillon County Sheriff's Office, said the body is that of Ricky Herndon, 38, of Blythewood.
According to Dillon County Coroner Sam Grimsley, Herndon's body was found near Highway 34, close to the Marlboro County border.
Dillon County Sheriff Major Hulon said Herndon was found around 7:30 a.m., and they do suspect foul play at this time. Other than that, deputies do not have much more information.
Neighbors said they heard gunshots overnight, but didn't think it was anything more than someone hunting. At daybreak they saw the body laying outside and then called for help.
People in the community said it concerns them this type of violent crime happens so close to home.
"You never know, you have to look over your shoulders and it's just scary especially here a person found dead and you don't know what reasons," said Jane Pate of Latta.
Virginia Clark said, "sure on your job or when you go shopping or anywhere, you have to watch yourself now more than you did years ago. You never know it could be a family member you don't know. And you don't know what's going on; it could be right in your back yard the next time."
Investigators say an autopsy is being done at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center to help figure out the cause of death.
