Spurrier: Gamecocks bigger force in recruiting

By Mandy Mitchell - bio | email

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The Gamecock football team has two more weeks of heavy recruiting before signing day, which is on February 2nd.

The coaching staff is still trying to lure some big name guys to campus, most notably this year's Mr. Football, Jadeveon Clowney

The last two Mr. Football winners signed with the Gamecocks. In 2008, it was Stephon Gilmore and last year, it was Marcus Lattimore.

Head Coach Steve Spurrier said South Carolina wasn't always positioned to grab the state's top player, but some recent success on and off the field has made the school a bigger force in recruiting over the last six years.

The Gamecocks currently have a signing class ranked anywhere from 20 to 26, depending on what publication you look at. Clemson is doing very well early with a class ranked in the top ten.
