COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The upcoming federal holiday will not come without some delays and street closings in downtown Columbia.
The NAACP is sponsoring a march and rally to recognize Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. Those attending should begin arriving for the event at Memorial Park on Washington Street around at 8:00am Monday. A prayer service will be held at Zion Baptist Church at 9:00am, A march will follow at 10:00am, which will travel along Washington and Main Streets before ending up at the SC Statehouse. Lastly, the rally will take place at the Statehouse from 10:30am - 12:30pm.
The event will cause a number of street closures. The first are set to begin around 6:30am and include: Washington Street between Wayne and Lincoln Streets; Gadsden Street between Lady and Hampton Streets, and Wayne Street between Washington and Hampton Streets. Those streets are expected to re-open by 10:30am.
The rest of the road closures will remain closed throughout the event.
-Starting at 7:45am, Gervais Street between Assembly and Sumter Streets will be closed along with Main Street between Gervais and Lady Streets
-Starting at 8:00am, Sumter Street between Gervais and Pendleton Streets will be closed along with Senate Street between Sumter and Marion Streets.
-Starting at 9:20am, the march route along Washington and Main Streets will be closed.
There are a number of detour routes that will be posted:
-Traffic traveling south on Assembly Street will be re-routed onto Taylor Street while those traveling north will be re-routed to College Street.
-Traffic traveling west on Gervais Street will be re-routed to Sumter Street while those traveling east will be re-routed to Assembly Street.
