When it's icy, many choose to take a taxi instead

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Even with road crews working around the clock, many people aren't taking any chances and are letting someone else do the driving.

The blue ribbon taxi company never closes its doors, but they made an exception on Monday because of the bad weather. Now that they're back open, the phones have been ringing off the hook.

The calls have been non-stop. "The hospitals and people just trying to get to work," said Stephen English.

Some calling just to see if they're open. "With the inclement weather, some people are just scared about driving," said English. "But they'll take a chance and ride with us."

English had to close on Monday due to weather, which is rare because this cab company never shuts down. "The reports from the drivers said it was getting bad, they couldn't see," he said. "We'll stay open as long as the streets are clear."

"They can depend on the cab company," said Sherman Howell, who has been driving 21 years.

He says the shutdown was hard. When he doesn't work, he doesn't get paid. "The bills are due and I felt kind of bad," said Howell.

Howell is glad to be back on the road and is having to remember some important rules of the road to stay safe. "Always keep a safe distance at all times, don't follow a car too close," he listed. "If you brake, do it slightly. Don't apply brakes too hard."
