SUMTER, SC (WIS) - A Sumter barber is robbed after cutting a man's hair.
In the 51 years of doing what he loves, James Wilder has never had any problems. That was until Wednesday when a new customer walked through the door. "We didn't figure it could be no danger or harm," said Wilder.
While Wilder made small talk with the young man, his long time friend Odell McDuffie - who keeps him company in the barbershop -- went outside to smoke. Then, Wilder got caught off guard. "I looked and he had his hand on a scarf with a barrel pointing at me," explained Wilder.
"He said, 'Give me your wallet. All the money.'," stated McDuffie.
When McDuffie noticed the man robbing his friend, he took off, jumping over the fence looking for help.
"When I got the wallet out, I pulled out all the money I had," claimed Wilder.
Then the man did something strange. "He asked me to get a broom and sweep the hair off the floor," said Wilder.
The young robber took off with the hair and the trash can. Wilder assumed the young man feared being tracked by the hair. "I started to knock the gun out of his hand, but I didn't want to try that," expressed Wilder, "I might have fallen."
While the Army Vet used humor to describe the ordeal, he's now planning to be more serious and alert with new customers. "I'm just going to watch the people who are coming in here now," explained Wilder, "Strange looking, funny looking people I don't know, I'm going to handle them very careful."
That's so he doesn't become a victim of the next person walking through the doors.
Police are still looking for the suspect. He is described as 5'4" tall, 150 pounds, and has a very short haircut. He's believed to be between 18 and 20 years of age and was last seen wearing a gray hoodie and black pants. Police were able to put together a sketch based of the description, and they indicated they were able to obtain surveillance footage of the suspect from a nearby store.
