COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia's Eau Claire community is taking action to make sure children get the educational foundation they need.
The "Eau Claire" Promise Zone focuses on providing parenting education and kindergarten readiness.
To help raise money for the program, the Columbia City Council appropriated $50,000 from a community development block grant.
A model for the program is the "Harlem Children's Zone." The group's founder, Geoffrey Canadam, spoke at Friday's fundraising luncheon at the Brookland Baptist Church Conference Center. He laid out the program's goals.
"Very high quality program for young people," said Canadam, "(It's) a real focus on how education after school and summer programming is really designed so young people who are disadvantaged really start making up some ground with their better performing peers in South Carolina."
The Promise Zone has been in the planning stages for two years.
