Woman killed driving wrong way on I-95

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – A wreck on Interstate 95 in Florence has resulted in the death of a 93-year-old woman Tuesday morning, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins, spokesperson for the South Carolina Highway Patrol, said the accident happened around 9:30 a.m. near the 161 mile marker when a vehicle was traveling northbound in the southbound lane.

The driver struck another vehicle head-on and was killed in the collision.

Florence County Coroner Bubba Matthews has identified the woman as 93-year-old Louise McKay of Wren Creek Ct. in Florence.

McKay died from injuries sustained in the accident shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The second driver involved was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

It is unknown at this time how McKay ended up driving down the wrong way on I-95.

Collins said no charges are expected to be filed, and the accident remains under investigation by SCHP.
