SC school teacher arrested in sex sting

FLORENCE, SC (WIS) - A teacher at a private school in Florence has been arrested and accused of trying to meet an underage girl for sex.

Attorney General Henry McMaster says 44-year-old John King of Lamar is charged with attempted criminal sexual conduct with a minor and three counts of criminal solicitation of a minor.

Officials at the Byrnes Schools in Florence say King has been suspended from his job as a math teacher.

The attorney general's office says King was arrested Dec. 30 in a sting conducted by the Charleston Police Department and the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office. King thought he was talking with an underage girl but was talking with an undercover female officer.

Darlington County Sheriff's Capt. Andy Locklair said deputies seized two computers from King's home during a search warrant. The computers will be transferred to the Charleston for examination. A third computer was in King's possession at the time of his arrest.

King is being held in the Charleston County jail under a $500,000 bond. It was not clear if he has an attorney. He has listed home phone number.
