COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Wow... What a year it has been!  As 2010 comes to a close and 2011 begins, we take a look back at the top stories of the year on

Suspect in Olar gas station murder curses victim's family

A man charged with killing a teenage Bamberg County store clerk screamed profanities at members of the victim's family during his bond hearing.

The Gamecocks beat UCLA 2-1 in extra innings to win the College World Series. Whit Merrifield's RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning gave South Carolina its first baseball national championship in school history.

Nikki Haley elected SC Governor

In November, Nikki Haley beat Vincent Sheheen to be elected South Carolina's first female, non-white Governor.

In less than an hour, four people died in two separate boat accidents on Lake Murray. Four boats and 13 people were involved.

Camden man's project helps blind man beat video game

A Camden man completed a nearly two year mission to help a friend he had never met play the games he loves. The catch? His friend is blind.

Teacher accused of having sex tapes and explicit pictures of boys will stay in jail

A 30 year Saluda County middle school teacher was arrested and accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a minor and possessing sexually explicit pictures of dozens of young boys who attended the school in the 1980's.

Two teens charged with raping 80-year-old

Two male juveniles were arrested after authorities say they broke into an 80-year-old woman's home, stole some property, and raped her.

8.6 inches of snow fell at the Columbia Metropolitan airport on February 10th.

The morning after being elected Columbia's first African-American mayor, Steve Benjamin was involved in a serious wreck.

Prosecutors say 29-year-old single mother, Shaquan Duley, confessed to suffocating 2-year-old Devan Duley and 1-year-old Je'Van inside a hotel room at Orangeburg's Trumps Inn, then dumping them into the Editso River.

Lexington woman gives birth after not knowing she was pregnant

A Midlands woman carried a baby for 9 months, but didn't know it until she went into labor.

Columbia firefighter Chance Zobel was hit and killed while fighting a median fire on I-20. The driver of the vehicle that hit Zobel was not licensed to drive in the United States.


A bizarre and tragic story that made international news. While looking for a legendary ghost train that supposedly appears in Iredell County every year, a group of ghost hunters encountered a real train. Christopher Kaiser pushed his girlfriend out of the way at the last second but couldn't get off a bridge in time and was killed.

A unnamed deputy was photographed in a bikini washing cars with dancers from the Diamonds North Gentleman's Club.

A Toledo, OH woman was unhappy when McDonald's would not serve her McNuggets during breakfast hours. She reportedly then got into a physical fight with the store manager and shattered the drive-thru window.

The search for Zahra Baker

The precious 10-year old-girl disappeared from Hickory in October. She was later found dismembered in different areas of Caldwell County.  Her death shocked the community and left many angry at her stepmother and father, who were widely suspected of being involved.  But as the year ends no one has been charged directly in her death.  Zahra's story touched the lives of thousands and brought an entire community together to vow that this will never happen again.  For that she's our top story of the year.

A burglary call for Oconee County sheriff's deputies turned bizarre when their suspect was found naked with a USB-powered computer peripheral in his rectum and apparently drugged, an incident report shows.
