New year brings busy night for cab drivers

By Taylor Kearns - bio | email

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - 2011 is right around the corner, and many revelers will be ringing in the new year Friday night with a few drinks.

For cab drivers, it means they'll be dealing with a busy and competitive night.

"Tomorrow's the busiest night of the year," claimed Peyton Greene, the general manager of Checker Yellow Cab.

It's teaming with Budweiser again to offer a free $10 ride from 11:00PM to 3:00am Friday night. If the ride exceeds $10, you pay the difference. "The last thing anybody wants is a DUI or to cause an accident or a fatality," expressed Greene, "It's a great program, and it grows every year."

Now if you'd prefer to 'ride the party home,' one driver has a special option for you. "We can continue the party in the car so to speak," said driver Mike Horger.

His custom van is loaded with club-like lighting, a speaker system and a home theater. "Laptop plays Blu-rays, music videos, and Mp3s," explained Horger, "If a customer is willing to pay a dollar for an iTune, I'll play whatever they like."

Horger and the other cab drivers will battle for your bucks Friday night. If you're interested in calling a cab company for a ride, here are a few helpful numbers:

  • "Party Cab" Discount Taxi: 381-6222
  • Checker Yellow Cab: 799-3311
  • Blue Ribbon Cab: 754-8163
  • Capitol City Cab: 794-2225
