Pelzer man sentenced for threatening solicitor's life

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - A Pelzer man was sentenced in federal court Tuesday for sending threats through the mail to a solicitor, the US Attorney's office said.

Jermaine Nelson, 23, was sentenced to 46 months imprisonment.

Evidence presented at the change of plea hearing established that Nelson, while incarcerated at the McCormick Correctional Institute, composed and mailed a letter addressed  to Solicitor Trey Gowdy.

On Oct. 23, 2009, Solicitor Gowdy received the letter from Nelson. Upon opening the envelope, Gowdy found a letter addressed to him containing numerous overt threats stating, "…your life is very limited...I sentence you to death…Jermaine Nelson will be the one to destroy you completely…you will die soon…you will be murdered…"

Nelson's fingerprints were found on the letter and records from McCormick Correctional Institute revealed that Nelson purchased postage on the day the letter was sent.

Nelson has two prior convictions for violent felonies.
