FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Two people died Sunday after the car they were in crashed on Interstate 77 in Fairfield County.
Fairfield County coroner Barkley Ramsey said 17-year old Phillip Anthony Mellot of Summerville was driving the car that crashed on I-77 southbound at mile marker 50 after 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
Ramsey said Mellot was improperly restrained because he had the top strap of the seatbelt behind his back. He was taken to the hospital, and where he died Sunday evening.
A passenger in the car, 30-year old Thomas Knox, II of Summerville, also died. Ramsey said Knox was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car. He died at the hospital.
Another passenger in the car, 17-year old Mary Scotten of York, was taken to the hospital. Ramsey said she will stay in the hospital overnight, and is scheduled to be released Monday morning.
The SC Highway Patrol had to shut the interstate down to one lane while crews cleaned the scene. That caused traffic to back up five to six miles. Sgt. Kelley Hughes said everything was clear by 9:00 p.m.
Investigators are working to figure out what caused the crash.
