Former SC lawmaker Harriet Keyserling dies at 88

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Harriet Keyserling, who represented
Beaufort for 16 years in the South Carolina Legislature championing
women's issues, has died. She was 88.
      Copeland Funeral Home confirmed Saturday that Keyserling died a
day earlier. A cause of death was not immediately made public.
      Keyserling served in state House from 1977 to 1993, focusing on
energy, nuclear waste and women's issues as well as education and
the arts.
      A native of New York City, Keyserling earned an economics and
math degree from Barnard College. She moved to Beaufort during
World War II, then raised a family before beginning her political
career with a term on the Beaufort County Council starting in 1975.
      She is survived by four children. Keyserling's son Billy served
two terms in the same House seat she held.
