Picking a real Christmas tree over artificial

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - According to the National Christmas Tree Association, nearly 31% of Americans decorate a live Christmas tree every year, but picking the perfect tree for your home can be quite a holiday task.

"Every once in a while we get the frosted tree, but most of the time it was green. It brings something into the home that a fake tree can't possibly bring," says one local resident.

"I'm a real tree fan. I grew up with real trees," says another.

"It's kind of part of my Christmas tradition," a third local agrees.

"Everybody's got their won way of celebrating," another woman claims, "It's vanity to try to say one's better than another, but for me, I personally think it's nice to have something fresh and green. It's beautiful."

There are some safety precautions you have to take when decorating a live tree in your home:

- When you first purchase your tree, make sure it is fresh and not dry.

- When you bring it home, make sure it has the appropriate amount of water and be sure to water the tree often.

- Check your Christmas lights for damage and frayed wires, which are a fire hazard.

- Be sure to unplug your lights when you go to sleep or leave home.
