SUMTER, SC (WIS) - The FBI and U.S. Department of Justice are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Sumter from nearly three months ago.

The shooting happened near St. Paul Church Road around 9:00am on September 28, when Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson SAID officers tried to detain 25-year-old Aaron Jacobs in connection with a carjacking and police chase two hours earlier.

Patterson said Jacobs showed a gun and "got physical," and officers shot and killed Jacobs.

The State Law Enforcement Division immediately began investigating the shooting, and on Friday, SLED Director Reggie Lloyd asked the FBI and the Justice Department to look at SLED's evidence.
Lloyd said he wants more eyes on the case to ensure every angle is covered, and hopes the federal investigators' report on the case will be ready by the end of the year.

After the FBI issues a report, SLED will forward the findings to the Sumter County solicitor's office.
