Driver crashes, dies in chase with Highway Patrol

WINNSBORO, SC (WIS) - A man died in a crash in Fairfield County Thursday night because of a suspended license.

Fairfield County Coroner Barkley Ramsey tells said 47-year-old Stepfon Roseberry approached a Highway Patrol checkpoint on Old Camden Road just outside of Winnsboro. Roseberry turned around because he was driving with a suspended license, and troopers started to chase him.

But almost immediately after turning around, the coroner said Roseberry ran off the road and crashed into a telephone pole and died on the scene from his injuries.

The results of a toxicology test are pending.

Ramsey said Fairfield County deputies handling the investigation with the help of the Lexington County Sheriff's Traffic Division.
