MANNING, SC (WIS) - One person is dead and five families do not have a place to live after fire ripped through a Manning apartment building Wednesday night.

Manning Fire Chief McElveen said the fire started in an apartment at the Market Bureau Apartments on East Rigby Street and spread to conjoining apartments in the two-story building.

McElveen said one man died when he could not escape an upstairs bedroom. Officials have not released the identity of the victim.

All other occupants were able to make it out of the building safely. McElveen said five families are without homes because of the fire damage. The displaced families are being assisted by the Red Cross.

One firefighter was injured while fighting the fire. He was transported to the hospital and later released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
