COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A man visiting his son for the holidays was struck and killed by a train Tuesday.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said 57-year-old David Clark Padley was struck by a Norfolk-Southern train around 5:30 p.m. off of Monticello Road.
Watts said Padley was in town from France visiting his son for the holidays. Padley was with a friend walking across a railroad bridge near I-20 and Monticello when the train came from behind, according to Watts.
Padley's friend tried to hang off the side of the bridge, but fell from the vibration created as the train went by, according to Watts. Padley was still on the bridge when he was hit by the train.
Padley was transported to Palmetto Richland Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:00 p.m.
The incident is under investigation by the Richland County Coroner's Office and Norfolk-Southern railroad.
