GAINESVILLE, FL. (WIS) - Florida football coach Urban Meyer is stepping down after the Gators appearance in the Outback Bowl.
Meyer led Florida to two national titles but began to show the strain of his high-profile job last season when he briefly quit but then returned to the team.
In a statement released by the university Wednesday, Meyer says "it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field."
He says the decision to resign was "a difficult one."
South Carolina beat the Gators 36-22 in Gainesville on November 13 to clinch the SEC East title.
The Gators will play Joe Paterno's Penn State Nittany Lions January 1st in Tampa.
