Seven more arrests made in Newberry Co. drug roundup

NEWBERRY, SC (WIS) - Nearly thirty people are under arrest as the result of a year-long drug roundup in Newberry County.

Newberry police officers, sheriff's deputies and agents from the State Law Enforcement Division worked on the investigation, and started making arrests Tuesday afternoon.

More than 80 arrest warrants were issued for 38 people on charges of drug distribution. "Because of today's court systems, drug investigations have become one of the most difficult investigations because of the evidence necessary to convince a judge or jury of the person's guilt," said Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster.

"So many today are inclined to think that 'they are just selling drugs' without a thought to the substantial amount of property crime that occurs to obtain drug money, the tremendous amount of violent crime that occurs in the drug culture and the long term affects that drugs have on those the drugs are being sold to especially young people," continued Foster. "It is an absolute fallacy to believe that drug sales and usage or a victimless crime because the reality is anyone can become a direct or indirect victim of the crimes associated with drugs such as larcenies, burglaries, home invasions and armed robberies."
