Columbia Museum of Art goes solar-powered

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - There's a new installment at the Columbia Museum of Art, but you'll have to get on the rooftop to check it out.

New solar panels have been installed to help reduce energy costs. The museum on Main Street received a $213,000 grant to get the project going.

"It was picked because it has a dual facet," said state Department of Energy Director Ashlie Lancaster. "It will not only save the museum 10 to 20 percent of traditional energy, it will also provide educational component for our school kids and the residents of the state."

The solar panels will offset 40 tons of carbon every year, and will save 379 trees each year.
