STANLY COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - An Albemarle man has been charged with impersonating an officer and using blue lights to pull a driver over.

According to the Stanly County Sheriff's Office, Derek Ryan Talbert, 21, tried to stop a vehicle traveling on Saint Martin Road on Sunday.

The sheriff's office says Talbert drove his gray 1989 Chevy Blazer behind the victim's vehicle and displayed a colored strobe light in an effort to get the victim to pull over.

The victim was an off-duty law enforcement officer from Union County who knew the Blazer was not a law enforcement vehicle.

The off-duty cop immediately notified the Stanly County Sheriff's Office and followed Talbert's vehicle until he drove home.

When sheriff's deputies arrived, they went to Talbert's home and arrested him.

He was charged with impersonating a sworn law enforcement officer and operating a blue light causing a vehicle being operated on the highway to stop.

Talbert was placed in the Stanly County jail and released on a $3,000 bond.  He will appear in Stanly County court on January 10, 2011.
