GADSDEN, SC (WIS) -Gadsden Elementary School is one of five South Carolina nominees for the 2011 U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School Award.
The State Department of Education nominated the local school for the award, which recognizes the institution for superior student academic achievement.
Richland One Office of Communications indicates that to be eligible for the award, nominees must achieve in the top 10% of schools in the state and make adequate yearly progress.
Karis Mazyck has been principal of the school for one year and says she wants to share credit for the schools success with her predecessor, Dr. Charles DeLaughter. "Teaching and learning are and will continue to be placed at the forefront at Gadsden," said Mazyck. "Each and every day, we make our best effort to surpass the expected."
The 2011 winners will be recognized at a ceremony in Washington in November.
