Former USC football coach passes away

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Former South Carolina head coach Marvin Bass passed away Friday morning at the age of 91.

Bass coached the Gamecocks for five seasons from 1961 to 1965 and is known for recruiting Dan Reeves to the Gamecock football team in 1962.  Bass later worked under Reeves during his time with the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons.

Before coming to South Carolina, he was also the head coach at his alma mater, William and Mary, during the 1951-52 season.

In his 37-year coaching career, Bass worked as a coach several different leagues including the World Football League and the Canadian League. He is credited with helping bring American football to Canada when he coached the Montreal Beavers in the Continental League.

Bass is a native of Petersburg, VA. He was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1981.

Bass has been living at the Rice Home retirement community in northeast Richland County. Greenlawn Funeral Home is handling funeral arrangements.
