LEXINGTON, SC (WIS) - A Lexington woman who was reported missing after a hit-and-run last week in Dorchester County has been found dead.

Lexington Police Lt. Matt Davis said Sherry Ann Barfield, 48, was found dead in a remote area off of Salem Road in Clarendon County around 1:00pm Monday. Davis said Barfield's death appears to be accidental, and foul play isn't suspected.

Police say Barfield left the scene of an accident on November 30 after she hit another car while traveling westbound on Interstate 26 near mile marker 181. Witnesses told police that they saw a woman driving leaving the scene of the accident.

Authorities said the airbags were deployed in the car, which had a broken windshield and a missing front bumper because of the accident.

Officers said Barfield suffered from various medical conditions which require medication, and family members were concerned because the medication had been recently changed.

Clarendon County Coroner Hayes Samuels said a cause of death is pending until a full autopsy is performed and toxicology reports are in.
